    New Addition: Cactus – S/T (1970)

    Cactus - Atco SD 33-340
The self titled debut from Cactus was released in the summer of 1970 for the ATCO label. Consisting of former members of Vanilla Fudge, The Amboy Dukes, and The Detroit Wheels, the group churned out some decent, albeit un-exceptional, hard rock. After initially calling it quits in 1972, the band reformed in 2006 (check out their site), minus singer Rusty Day who was killed during a drug deal in the early 80s. Copies of the “Cactus” record can be found easily enough in the wild, and they regularly show up for sale online for under $10. Check out their killer cover of Mose Allison’s “Parchman Farm” below!

      Posting resumes this week!

I know it’s been a bit quiet on the site this past year, but that will hopefully be changing this week, for real this time! I’ll be expanding the focus of the site a bit, and instead of just posting on upcoming releases and vinyl pre-orders, i’ll also be posting about recent additions to my personal collection, both new titles and old. The store page will be getting an update soon as well, hopefully by summer.

Calling All Sabbath Fans: Freedom Hawk’s “Holding On” Album Out Now On Vinyl!

Freedom Hawk Holding On Holding On, the third full-length album from Virgina Beach stoner rock maestros Freedom Hawk is now available on vinyl from Small Stone Recordings. You’d be hard pressed to find a review of these guys that doesn’t mention Black Sabbath, but that’s not a bad thing at all. While singer T.R. Morton’s vocals have an uncanny Ozzy-ness and the disc has its share of Iommmi-esque riffs, Holding On is not simply a Sabbath clone album, but a continuation of the sound that Sabbath established. Holding On, despite its vintage influences, still sounds new and exciting, and is definitely worthy of repeated spins. The vinyl, limited to 500 copies (150 Black, 175 Aqua Blue, and 175 Opaque Red), all on 180 gram vinyl, was released this past Tuesday, and is available direct from Small Stone for $20 with your choice of vinyl color. Check out the album track “Her Addiction” below!

Alternative Tentacles To Reissue Dicks Material In May

Dicks Kill From The Heart vinyl Some great news to report for fans of 80s Texas punk legends The Dicks, as Alternative Tentacles will be reissuing the bands early catalog this May. The singles The Dicks Hate The Police (1980) and Peace? (1984), as well as the full lengths Kill From The Heart (1980) and These People (1985) will all be getting the reissue treatment. Most exciting is the news of a legitimate Kill From The Heart LP. While it has been heavily bootlegged over the years with varying quality, a legit reissue seemed like it would never happen due to issues with the original label and the disappearance of the original master tapes. This version is sourced from a pristine vinyl copy of the original release. All the reissues will be released with their original covers and track orders. The first 1000 copies of the These People LP (which is sourced from the original tapes) will include the Peace? single, after the first 1000 are gone, Peace? will be available separately. The CD of Kill From The Heart will include the Hate The Police single. The street date for the reissues is scheduled for May 15th, no pre-order info yet, but we’ll try and keep you posted. UPDATE: While the tracks from Hate The Police will be included with the KFTH LP via download, the Hate The Police vinyl is being handled by Oakland’s 1-2-3-4 Go! Records. Killer Heavy Rock N Roll From TX, American Sharks “Weedwizard” 7″ Out Now!

American Sharks Weedwizard A pretty killer 7″ showed up in the mailbox this week from the Texas based American Sharks. The two track single, titled “Weedwizard” was released late last month for Austin label Pau Wau Records. The a-side, “XVI” has a stoner/doom feel, while the b-side, “Indian Man” leans more towards the garage/rock n’ roll side, and both sides have been racking up quite a few spins on my turntable. Pressed in an edition of 300 copies, you can pick one up for just $5 direct from the band here. Check out both tracks below, then get the vinyl!

“Its contents unite newly-penned yet timeless-sounding material such as ‘Geburah’, ‘The Horla’, ‘Brainwashed’ and ‘Upon This Cord’ with four long-lost tracks from the classic-era. ‘Dead Sea Scrolls’ and ‘Witching Hour’ both date back to 1983/’84, whilst ‘Into The Dark’ and ‘Guillotine’ are older still. Both were live favourites during Angel Witch’s late-1970s heyday, indeed ‘Guillotine’ was actually intended to have appeared on the ‘Angel Witch’ album.”

Cheap Time Wallpaper Music May 1st is the street date for Wallpaper Music, the latest album by Cheap Time, the super rockin’ garage trio from Tennessee led by Jeffrey Novak.
