      Pre-Order: Devo – Hardcore Devo: Volume 1 & 2 (Reissues)

Devo - Hardcore Volume 2 Hardcore Devo! The albums “Hardcore Devo: Volume 1″ and “Hardcore Devo: Volume 2″ will finally be officially released on vinyl courtesy of the Superior Viaduct label. Originally released by Rykodisc in 1990 and 1991 respectively, the albums were only available on CD and cassette. These collections contain some of the earliest recordings of songs that would become Devo. classics. From the Superior Viaduct site:

“Recorded on various 4-track machines and in tiny studios, basements, and garages between 1974-1977, Hardcore reveals their strikingly clear vision: rock n’ roll stripped bare of its collective cool and jerked back into propaganda fit for post-modern man. It’s no surprise that these transmissions would soon catch the eye and ear of Brian Eno who later produced their landmark 1978 debut album. Noisy synth, strangled guitar chops, and a primitive rhythmic thud power the early DEVO sound. Threaded beneath it all are lyrical themes of post-McCarthy paranoia, middle-class ephemera, and DEVO’s long-running topic of choice: sex, or lack thereof.

Few moments in pop music history can match the grinding, pent-up energy of “Mongoloid” and the spastic bounce and sputter of “Jocko Homo” (two anthems presented in their earlier and superior versions here). Cult favorites like “Mechanical Man” and “Auto-Modown” make Volume 1 essential listening.

Volume 2 digs further into the band’s cranial bunker with the caveman hit “Be Stiff,” the space age surf-blues of “Clockout” and even a demented take on bubblegum pop, “Goo Goo Itch.” This 2xLP set includes four previously unreleased tracks: “Man From The Past,” “Doghouse Doghouse,” “Hubert House,” and “Shimmy Shake.” “

Both albums are currently available to preorder from the label, The single LP Volume 1 is $17, and the double LP of Volume 2 is $23, or order both together. A deluxe version on red vinyl is already sold out. Check out the track “Auto Modown” from Volume 1 below!

        Dark Round The Edges Reissue

Portland’s Machu Picchu Ltd made preorders available today for their second release, a reissue of the heavy psych masterpiece “Dark Round The Edges”, the 1972 album by Dark. “Dark Round The Edges” was originally released on a vanity label in the UK in an extremely limited quantity. The album has seen several unofficial reissues over the years, however the Macchu Pichu edition is officially licensed, as well as remastered. From the label’s site:

“One of THEE greatest guitar-heavy psych records in the world, “Dark Round the Edges”was originally issued in an edition of around 50 copies, mostly for friends, family, and the odd record company. Its reputation has since blossomed into something resembling a redwood, or perhaps an original Van Gogh. This album is the holy grail for lovers of fuzz-driven hard rock, and has been the most sought-after privately pressed LP on the planet.

We’ve spared no expense to bring you the deluxe reissue of this classic, an album be- loved by heads & cosmic couriers around the world for its great songwriting, terrific instrumental workouts, and mysterious vibe. ZERO TIME IS NOW.

•Remastered and restored by Warren Defever for maximum brilliance

•Sleeve notes by the group’s songwriter and guitarist Steve Giles, including a complete group history

•Sleeved in a tip-on gatefold jacket, with an expanded version of the original booklet – 20 pages of lyrics and never before seen photos from the group’s personal archives”

New Addition: The Yellow Payges – Volume 1 (1969)

Yellow Payges - Volume 1 I’ve been picking up a lot of great psych stuff lately on the UNI Label, a subsidiary of Universal and MCA which released a ton of great psychedelic albums between 1967 and 1972. Released in 1969, “Volume 1″ was the first and only full length album put out out by The Yellow Payges from Los Angeles during their 5 year run from 1966 to 1970, however the group did release quite a few singles. While “Volume 1″ has not been reissued on vinyl, originals can usually be found on ebay for $10 to $15 for a copy in decent shape. If you want more info on the band, a pretty in-depth bio can be found here. Check out one of my favorite tracks from the album, “Crowd Pleaser”, in the video below!

            Pre-Order: Thee Mighty Caesars Reissues

            thee mighty caesars reissues

Four Thee Mighty Caesars reissues are due out soon from UK label Damaged Goods. Thee Mighty Caesars were led by the mighty Billy Childish, and also included John Agnew on bass and Graham Day on drums. The four albums, “Beware The Ides Of March” (1985), “Acropolis Now” (1986), “Thee Caesars Of Trash” (1986), and “Wiseblood” (1987), will be released on May 27th. This will be the first time any of these albums has been readily available on vinyl in over 25 years, with the exception of “Acropolis Now”, which had a limited reissue on Hangman’s Daughter in 1997. The LPs are available to pre-order now, and are priced at £9.99 (about $15) each direct from the label’s store, which is a steal considering what originals can go for online.. The label is also releasing a box set of the four albums on gold colored vinyl, which is limited to just 100 copies and will sell for £80.00 (about $120). The box set will begin shipping in June, just a bit later than the individual LPs. Check out a track from the 1986 album “Acropolis Now” below!

New Addition: Harold Smith’s Majestic Choir / Majestic Choir & Soul Stirrers ‎– We Can All Walk A Little Bit Prouder / Why Am I Treated So Bad (1968)

Majestic Choir I first heard the Majestic Choir & The Soul Stirrers play “Why Am I Treated So Bad” after picking up the Soul Jazz Records compilation “Chicago Blues” back in 2004. The song, written by Roebuck “Pops” Staples of The Staples Singers instantly became one of my favorite tracks on the comp. I recently was luck enough to stumble onto a cheap promo copy of the 45, which was released by the Chicago based Checker label in 1968. It’s not a particularly expensive record, and if you can’t find one locally, copies can often be found online for under $10. Have a listen to Majestic Choir & Soul Stirrers play “Why Am I Treated So Bad” in the video below!

New Addition: Make-Up – Blue Is Beautiful (1995)

Make Up Blue Is Beautiful I’m a long time fan of DC’s The Make-Up, the post Nation of Ulysses band led by the always fascinating  Ian Svenonius, and bought most of their more than a dozen singles as they were released, but failed to snag a copy of “Blue Is Beautiful” until this week. The debut release by the band, it was released on their own Black Gemini label, and was produced Fugazi‘s Guy Picciotto, who would later produce their first full length LP “Destination: Love; Live! At Cold Rice” for Dischord. Both sides of the single are available on the 1999 K Records compilation “I Want Some”, which was recently reissued by M’Lady’s Records, or you can usually snag the original 7″ for $5-$10 on ebay. Check out a recent live version of “Blue Is Beautiful” below!
